Since Apple introduced their AirPods in late 2016, wireless earbuds have started to become a thing. The first time we saw them, we weren’t sure about them. We weren’t sure what the real value proposition was over traditional earphones or headphones. It took actually grabbing a pair for ourselves before we could really see why they were impacting the audio landscape. After testing our favorite pair of wireless earbuds in 2017, here are our top 3 reasons why we think they are indeed better than earphones.

Wireless

They’re wireless. I know, I know. The award for the most obvious statement of 2018 goes to me. But until you’ve actually had earphones that are completely wireless, its difficult to appreciate that freeing sensation you get.

What’s the biggest annoyance of earphones? They get tangled all the time and you’ve got to spend 5-10 minutes unraveling them every day. This is biggest plus for wireless earbuds in our opinion. They can’t get tangled because there simply is no wire. So when I say they’re wireless, it’s not just about looking cool, it’s the practicality of getting to your music quicker everyday.

Light

Before now, wireless audio has only been available in headphones. They’re great for when you want to block out the world, but sometimes you want to listen to music without your colleagues thinking you’re a complete ignoramus.

Having something wireless and light for your everyday audio experience is something that’s actually very new. It’s a different sensation – more than once, I actually forgot I had the wireless earbuds in my ears. It feels like a significant step forward to the days when we’ll have computer chips inside our heads speaking to us. Make of that what you will.

Link Multiple Devices

This is a feature that took me completely by surprise. A real added bonus. A good pair of wireless earbuds can connect to multiple devices at the same time. This doesn’t sound like much, but in practice it’s super convenient.

Say you’re using earbuds to listen to music on your tablet (wirelessly). You get an incoming phone call on your smartphone. You can switch devices instantly – have a conversation on the smartphone using the wireless earbuds – then switch back to listening to music on your tablet. All without actually using the devices. Pretty cool.

So there you have it. There is quite a lot of stuff here that makes wireless earbuds superior to earphones or headphones. Surprising I know. We’re converts and now big fans of wireless earbuds.

At The Urban Upgrade, we stock our favourite wireless earbuds in 5 fun colors: White, Black, Red, Gold and Pink. They’ve got all the features mentioned here (with a few others too!) and right now we’re selling them $100 cheaper than Apple are. Check them out here:

Wireless headphones for me, the ear buds actually hurt my ears!

Hi Zac, are these apple devices only? I’m an Android man.

    Zac · January 7, 2018 at 8:17 pm

Hey Glenn, good to hear from you. These work on all devices – android included. As long as you have Bluetooth on your device they’ll work great 😊 Let me know if you have any more questions

I’ve been a dedicated fan of my wireless headphones but indeed, they do have quite a bit of sound leakage, and can be a slight pain in the neck (literally and metaphorically speaking) during my workouts…got a pair of wireless earbuds with my new iPhone so might pop em in and give them a go 🙂

What’s a good brand of wireless earphones whose battery lasts long? Also, comfortable to ears. I got one that slips out of my ear but when I dig deeper into my ear it hurts.

Hey Karen, if you’re looking for the top of the line – go with Apple’s AirPods. They’re really pricey though so watch out. At The Urban Upgrade we stock a great pair that have up to 4 hours of talk/listen time or 100 hours of standby time. I wear mine all the time – they’re really comfortable and slightly bigger than Apple’s AirPods so won’t fall out all the time. Oh let me check! Do you have branches in Philippines?

        Zac · January 13, 2018 at 9:25 pm

Hey Karen! We can ship to the Philippines no problem – and for free too. They’ll take 30-50 days to get to the Philippines 🇵🇭 What else can I help you with?

Great post! I’m wondering if they would stay in during a run? The thing I hate most about my Apple earphones (not wireless) are I have to push them back in when I’m exercising and it’s sooooo annoying!
