Power banks are kind of a big deal right now. You can get big ones, small ones, ones that are shaped like cats, we even saw one in the shape of a poo emoji the other day… For travelers they can be a real lifeline. Today, we want to make the case for perhaps a travelers most useful variant. A solar charging power bank can essentially keep your gadgets going indefinitely, without ever needing a mains power outlet. Here’s why you should pick one up before going on your next adventure.

Safety

This is the biggest one. Say you’re going on a 3 day trek in the mountains and you get lost. Your phone died ages ago and you can’t read a map to save your life. Pretty scary right? A solar charging power bank can get you reoriented by allowing you to use technology again. Use a maps application to get back on track or call a friend to help out. The point is, technology can help you when you’re in a bind.

With a standard power bank, you might have used the typical 3 recharges you get, then what do you do? With our favourite solar charging power bank, you can clip it to your rucksack all day, then get hours of juice on an evening.

Connection

Chances are, if you’re picking up a solar charging power bank, you’re going somewhere remote. Maybe you’re even going alone or with others who don’t speak your language. Your devices can keep you connected to the outside world and help combat loneliness. Upload all your pensive lonely photos to Facebook. Write about how a rock face in the middle of the Andes changed your life to your blog.

Have the best of both worlds – trek in the remote mountains during the day, FaceTime your mother at night.

Convenience

Most solar charging power banks aren’t much of a burden to carry either. Our favourite is small, compact and if you clip it to your rucksack (as we recommend), it won’t actually take up any room.

A cautionary tale – remember to put it inside your backpack when checking your backpack on a flight! I forgot to do this and unsurprisingly, it wasn’t there on the other end.

Look for a solar charging power bank with surge protection and a handy LED light system so you know how much juice is left. With some of the better ones, you can actually charge multiple devices at the same time.

Here at The Urban Upgrade, we stock one of the best solar charging power banks out there. It does everything we mentioned above, and you can pick one up for only $45 delivered. Check it out here:

Everyone uses them here in Thailand, I didn’t realise what I was missing until I got my own – I just need to be better at remembering to charge it!

I definitely agree! It’s one of those things you don’t realise you need until you get one.

We’re in Cambodia right now, going through Vietnam in the next few weeks. You been before? Enjoy! Loved Barcelona and the Canary Islands – dying to see Madrid

          jpabsy · January 14, 2018 at 6:08 pm

Ahh! That’s right, Cambodia. No, first time, haven’t been yet. Barcelona is definitely on my list, am looking into Madrid. Enjoying your time?

          Zac · January 14, 2018 at 6:57 pm

Yeah Barcelona is great, definitely see the gaudi gardens. And there was this tiny bar we loved that only fit about 6 people, but was an amazing time. La whiskeria I think it was called – lookout for that 😊 yeah just arrived in kampot, seems like a beautiful little town. After 6 weeks in the rural areas, I can’t wait for a big burger tonight!

          jpabsy · January 15, 2018 at 5:13 am

I’ll put those on my list, thanks! Yes! Burgers are my go to 😂😂 have fun!
