Noise Cancelling Headphones seem almost too good to be true. A product that can block out all sound and give you complete audio silence seems crazy. They’re also usually kinda pricey, so it’s a little bit of a risk when you’re unsure if they actually work. I’ve been using a range of noise cancelling headphones for years. Here, I’ll talk about why they were founded, what they can do, what they can’t do and why you might think about picking up a pair.
In 1978, Dr. Amar Bose (founder of Bose Corporation) was flying back home from Zurich in a very noisy aeroplane. After the experience, he setup the Noise Reduction Technology Group within Bose.
11 years later, Bose introduced the first noise reduction headphones for the aviation industry. This gives you a brief insight into what they should be used for. Blocking out background noise. Noise cancelling headphones were originally designed to block out noise from planes, trains and automobiles.
How do they work?
In the simplest terms, they use fancy microphones to generate an inverse sound wave that cancels out any sound wave that may intrude. Essentially, they attempt to send a sound wave inverse to the background noise.
Here’s a little inforgraphic from infographicality.com to demonstrate how they work:
3 Reasons to pick up a pair
Simply put, they’ll transform your commute. They’re specifically designed to block out that crying baby on your flight or the annoying PA system on the train. Noise cancelling headphones will block out background chatter and they really excel with low level sound and chatter.
You’ll sleep easier, get more work done and feel more refreshed.
70% of the time, I don’t even play music through my favourite noise cancelling headphones. The peace is enough. But when I’m feeling like it, they emit a noticeably superior sound. With no background noise, the sound is crisper, sharper. And the real advantage is that you can have them set to a lower volume than you would with a pair of earphones.
With this lower volume, comes an even sharper sound. For me, I get peace from silence (which these are great at providing). But if music gives you peace, noise cancelling headphones will upgrade your sound.
For many of us, we work in a loud, hectic and oftentimes distracting environment. This’ll take anywhere from 5-15 minutes out of your hour, every hour. Imagine how much more productive you could be if you had complete silence, complete focus.
This is why I always carry my noise cancelling headphones. Working in a coffee shop, an office, a school even (like me right now!) becomes possible. And crucially – not an inconvenience. Grab the freedom to work productively anywhere.
As mentioned, noise cancelling headphones are good for blocking out background noise. They will not totally block loud noise. If you go to a rock concert with them on, you”ll still be able to hear. If you work on demolition sites everyday, they will not block explosions.
Be sure you use them for the right reasons, and they can remove everyday annoyances. Deploy them when you need to – don’t use them as an excuse to be anti social and don’t expect them to block out extremely loud noises.
Use noise cancelling headphones to give you peace against low level background noise, and they might just change your life (at least a little!).
