As our smart devices become more powerful and attention-grabbing, the batteries inside them are simply not keeping up. As a result, portable power banks are on the rise. If you buy the right power bank, you can simply plug your gadgets into it, and get 1, 2 or 3 new charges of your smart device. Think of power banks like a convenient extra battery for your phone. Here’s our guide on how to choose the right power bank for your gadgets.

The first thing to do when looking at power banks is to look at your device. You want a power bank that’ll give your device at least 1 full charge. You’re looking for a number in mAh (miliamp-hour). This is essentially the storage capacity of your battery. Most batteries will have this printed on.

Make sure you get a power bank that has at least a higher mAh than your device. This’ll be written in the technical details of’most good retailers product pages’. Price tends to increase with the mAh capacity of a power bank. A 10000 mAh power bank that charges your smartphones 5 times will be more expensive than a 2000 mAh power bank that only gives one charge. We stock a range of power banks at The Urban Upgrade – our cheapest offering with a 2000 mAh capacity, our most heavy duty offering with a 20000 mAh capacity.

You might have read stories about disreputable retailers selling power banks that have harmed devices or in some cases, given out electrical charges. These cases are very few, but it’s still a good idea to be careful.

Make sure your power bank has surge protection before buying.

The final point on how to choose the right power bank is to pick the power bank that suits your lifestyle. If you need a power bank for a quick 3pm smartphone recharge everyday, you probably only require a lower capacity power bank. Pick up something that’ll give you one or two recharges, to keep your smartphone going until you get home later that night.

If you’re more likely to be going nomad for several days, pick up something more heavy duty. If you’re traveling, or unsure whether the next mains outlet is, go for something with over 10000 mAh. This means you can watch movies on your tablet in the middle of the desert or use a maps app after an 11 hour bus journey to find your hostel. Solar charging power banks are also a great idea if this is you.

In summary, if you want to know how to choose the right power bank, start by looking at your needs. Start with all your gadgets you need more juice for, add up their mAh requirements – then look for a power bank that at least satisfies that minimum. Think about your lifestyle and how many charges you need.

Another thing I have learned is that you get 80% of the advertised capacity at best. Keep it in mind when working out the mAh that you need for your devices.
